39 years! 😮 A woman’s life expectancy 200 years ago in 1825.
Today US women can expect to live just over 80 years with average onset of menopause at 51.5 years. That is almost half a lifetime without needed hormonal balance🤯 A man has more naturally occurring estrogen🕺than a post menopausal woman!Talk to your medical team about HRT!!
New understanding and updated delivery methods make it safe and effective for the majority of women. The Menopause Society is a great resource (menopause.org)

“Just hold me fast and kind” that is what your hip may be saying to your pelvis! 🥰 Can’t wait to learn more top down control exercises this weekend from Steve Dischiavi, PT @finishfirst_pt and @hermanwallacepelvicrehab💪🏼💃🏻
This exercise challenges the hip rotators to keep the standing leg & knee still while the gesture leg moves forward and back. Looks easy—give it a try—Don’t lose control…
Frequently hips lack internal rotation Patrick Wenning, PT demonstrates how to self mobilize the hip into Internal rotation. Lie on the side to be mobilized, leg straight and in line with the trunk. Other leg is flexed to 90º at the hip and knee with the lower leg on foam roll. Use a towel roll wedged in front of the pelvis at the level of the ASIS (pointed bone on the lower pelvis). Roll the upper shoulder and hip forward at the same time, slowly and only a little bit, to allow the lower part of the pelvis to roll over the leg bone (femur). Roll back to the starting position.
Get your tickets! Come support our local artist dancers and Washington’s very own ballet company.
Pics are from the spring Gala evening. Patrick Wenning, PT and Miriam Graham PT represented Restore Motion at this terrific event!
Restore Motion is proud to be physical therapy and wellness for TWSB!
Miriam took a bit to realize it really was her in that red dress and that they were okay to post—talk about getting caught up in over-thinking! 😂
Hard to believe a month already passed since the JTCC Gala!🤯🎾
Great evening to support 25 years of this wonderful organization “Transforming lives through sport and education by providing Tennis For Everybody” 🎉

Dr. Miriam Graham, PT shows how to do a pelvic floor muscle release with small ball. Sitting on the ball almost inverts the hammock shaped pelvic floor muscles with the pressure of body weight against the ball.
This activity should not be painful. Aim to sit on the ball from 30 seconds to 2 minutes while doing diaphragmatic breathing, then remove the ball and sit back down on the chair. You should feel as if the two sit bones (ischial tuberosities) are further apart and that you have “more room” in the pelvic floor area. As always, ask your healthcare provider if this exercise is right for you.
Tight hip flexors? Stretching not getting to the tight spot? Try this self release using a ball on the iliacus muscle. As always consult your healthcare provider to make sure this exercise is right for you.
Hip flexors are commonly tight AND weak. Sitting for work and leisure is an issue! If you feel tight and “nothing” is helping, you may need to add some strength training to your program. See your PT!
Reshma and Miriam were honored to teach members of the Washington Spirit ⚽️Medical Team about women’s pelvic health for the female athlete! 💪🏼
Snow didn’t deter Restore Motion or Washington Spirit, the first part of the class was virtual in January. This past Monday, the course concluded in person to go over assessment, dynamic ultrasound, and exercise prescription.
Restore Motion is so proud ☺️ of our local team and the wisdom of their medical staff to seek out this important information to specifically treat our women athletes!
Tomorrow it all begins at 7a! Dr. Miriam Graham, PT will lead a live 30 min workout Tuesdays at 7am for the next 6 weeks. They will be recorded if you can’t make it. Practice with the recording later in the week! We will share a private FB Group and have weekly Q&A sessions (Drs. Rachel Rubin and Katherine Klos, urologists and sexual medicine specialists) and Dr. Miriam Graham, Restore Motion physical therapist.
Maybe you too will be able to toss a 200# man!💃🏻😎 We are excited to help strengthen our community💪🏼

Restore Motion is 20! 🥳🍾🙌🏼🎉
Grad School was the beginning…
Reshma and Miriam were alphabetically assigned to the same cadaver in Gross Anatomy.
Despite a heated argument about the location and course of the transverse facial artery 🤬🤓 (or maybe because of it😂) they have been together ever since! 🌸
After working 10 years together for the same hospital based organization, they decided to create Restore Motion (thier initials).
20 years goes by fast when you LOVE what you do❤️❤️❤️
So thankful for all of our patients, current and former team members, and mentors and colleagues! Looking forward to continuing to add value and exceed expectations🎉
We had a SOLD OUT event last night!! Dr. Rachel Rubin @drrachelrubin Dr. Andrea Singer, and Dr. Miriam Graham @miriamgrahampt spoke about osteoporosis, bone health, hormones and exercise for survival to a crowd of smart, strong💪🏼 women💃🏻 (and Patrick Wenning, PT😂)
So proud to be able to host this important event! When women are educated about their bodies and conditions they can make good choices for their health and quality of life!
Restore Motion is celebrating 20 years in 2024🎉 We took the opportunity to celebrate our 20th and Dr. Rubin’s 2nd Anniversary of being in the business of helping people have healthier bodies and better sex 😎
Let’s do Lunch! Sitting isn't good for you! -- But what should you do when not sitting to make up for it? Black cats 🐈⬛, Hot dogs 🌭, and The Exorcist stairs! Happy Halloween 🎃 (aka the day before dia de los muertos 💀) Alejandra @thesecondtheory and Kerry @cherrykallahan dressed up for work. Miriam @miriamgrahampt meditated on the Georgetown staircase featured in The Exorcist movie (of course she was meditating😂) Beautiful sunshine through the trees. Do your PT homework before going out to Trick-or-Treat!
Meditation — ugh! Not today😩 Yes—you can do “hard things!” Taking care of yourself, doing your PT homework, and modulating your activity as you heal are all hard things. Show up. Even if you don’t feel like it, the work pays off. Last week I posted about “hard meditation week”, this week I continue to practice. “Gather the mind and drop it down into your heart…” This morning I had to climb the rafters and use a fishing net to pull my mind down. My heart was none too pleased to receive such a rowdy guest 🤬 The image of wrangling a willful toddler into its car seat came to mind and I laughed out loud 😂 Monkey mind, rabbit mind 🐇, now cranky toddler mind👶🏼 All four of us started 5 cycles of breathing. My heart felt cramped and tight as I thought: “This is hard, I don’t feel like it today, Maybe I’ll do this later, This is not inviting or spiritual—I’m just sitting on the floor of my study.” Suddenly, a woman was standing in front of me. She held my head in her hands and told me, “it will be okay.” Then she reached into my chest, pulled my heart out, wiped it off, put it back, and said “it will be easier now” 🤯 Boom she was gone. My second meditation was easier, more peaceful, lighter. That was my gift for today. I would have missed it if I didn’t just show up! Second pic is me in room 4 at Restore Motion. Thankfully, heart in chest🥰 3rd and 4th pics are @reshmapatelrathod and @miriamgrahampt in Doha
Day 7 “hard meditation week” Celebration 🥳 Day 🙌🏼 @reshmapatelrathod and I were taught to begin meditation by dropping the mind into the body, into the heart “as if coming home to a favorite chair after a long day.” This morning dropping my mind into my heart was easy. Just had to “open the door” the mind bounded in, ready to jump on the bed in enthusiasm “Woo Hoo we made it!” 🎊 I smiled, let the image appear and dissolve into awareness. Not pushing it away nor holding onto it to make a story (bit of a bummer because it was about to be a great story!)Thinking about the 2 weeks since returning from our retreat, I see meditation as a friend. Sometimes difficult but usually an oasis 🏝️ —a place to start the day and a place to carry with me throughout the day🥰 I have a more spacious heart. Today I did a “loving kindness” meditation for each of my “Bhutan Beauty” travelers, teachers, and guides. I returned from my trip with 14 sisters and one little brother 👦🏻 @felisbhutantoby I dedicated my practice today to the benefit of all with a SPECIAL shout out to my Nuchu, Sonam, who is starting a new adventure in Australia🦘🇦🇺 Friendships make the best souvenirs 💕
Pics include my Nepalese shawl that imbues me with undisclosed superpowers 💃🏻 and “moon” singing bowl, Reshma and I at Ogyen Choling Heritage House, Bhutan pink cosmos
Day 6 “hard meditation week” ✅ There will always be dry spells where things feel hard and perhaps unfulfilling. This is normal. This morning I felt like my meditation was easy—🪶everything else was hard! Had to carve away “stuff” to get to that mind-heart resting place of meditation💖 I’m close to the end of my “hard week” and see I’ve benefited from making time to cultivate “awareness” and appreciate how simple it is in final analysis. I am here now. Things are always changing. In time I won’t be here. The idea of impermanence. Before I re-started my meditation practice that thought seemed depressing. Now it seems freeing🌬️We are all here for an undetermined amount of time—never know. Let’s make it count!! 🙌🏼 How lovely is that? 💐 Let’s be kind, let’s care, let’s be generous of spirit, smile. For the people at Restore Motion, better movement and function of the body is our gift to give and our passion❤️You only have one body—it is more than a convenient vessel to carry your brain around. If you aren’t feeling at ease in your body, consider PT, call us. Pics of @ogyencholing_foundation — a semi-private walkway where I could dance a bit without anyone seeing 😎 my music helped create an altered state (or maybe it was the thin air)😂@reshmapetelrathod and @miriamgrahampt were attending a writing workshop. Day 5 “hard meditation week” 🧘🏽♀️ Let me tell you about something near and dear to my ❤️ — POSTURE 😍 some say “I can’t sit on the floor, can’t cross my legs like that, can’t meditate.” Yes you can meditate! You don’t have to sit on the floor with legs crossed. (Don’t get caught up in the glamor and mystery of meditation). All that is required is for your back to be reasonably straight, chin slightly tucked to balance ⚖️ your head more easily on your spine — You can sit on a chair, on the floor with your back supported by a wall, or even lying down (don’t fall asleep 😂) Pro-tip. Elevate your seat. If your “sit bones” are higher than the rest of your legs it can help unlock tightness in your low back and allow you to sit with a normal lumbar curve. Still tight in low back and hips? Consider PT! Stay tuned for our soon to be released YouTube video “work break stretches”
Additional pro-tip — I choose my teacup and preset my tea the night before for easy 0:dark30 access🙂. Pics are of @reshmapatelrathod and @miriamgrahampt at Buddha Point in Thimphu. Lastly Daphne doing her own, independent, morning meditation 🧘🏽♀️💃🏻

Hola mis amigos en JavaNation, gracias por permitirme practicar mi español! Beautiful day to write outside — where are you @ericweinerbooks ?🔭 #coffeewithfriends #workingmoms
Day 4 “hard meditation week” 📆 the half way point. (Days 1-3 posted on @miriamgrahampt)
“As soon as you realize you’ve drifted off—you are already back.”
Such a kind, soothing, forgiving phrase! Our teacher @jameshopkinsnepal used this idea to reassure students and warned to not make judgments about a wandering mind during meditation. (A little like running back to home base while playing tag🏃🏻♀️”SAFE!”) …I’ve drifted…Oh look at me, already back!—extra points” 😇 Well maybe NOT extra points. The last step of meditation is to give away any “merit” gained from the practice. We don’t keep the merit gained in our meditation for ourselves—we dedicate it to the benefit of all. “May whatever merit that comes from this practice go toward the enlightenment of all beings” This is the “seal” of practice. 🧘🏽♀️. The pictures are from the area around @ogyencholing_foundation. The room Reshma and I shared was previously a shrine room of the palace — you can see the alter behind us. Reshma and I sitting in front of a Bhutanese style stupa, a pic of our group out for a hike ~16 miles from Tibet! How cool is that???? ❤️😎

Hey mamas-to-be! 👋🤰
🌟 Supporting Your Core During Pregnancy 🌟
Did you know that as your belly grows during pregnancy, it can cause the rectus abdominis muscle (the “six-pack” muscle) to separate? This condition, known as diastasis recti, can lead to discomfort and weakened core strength. But fear not! We’ve got a fantastic tool to help you stay strong and supported throughout this incredible journey. 💪✨
Kinesiotape for belly support! 🙌
Kinesiotape is a flexible and breathable tape that can provide gentle support to your rectus abdominis muscle. By strategically applying it to your belly, you can encourage proper alignment and engagement of your core muscles, helping to prevent or alleviate diastasis recti.
💡 Important Tip: While Kinesiotape is generally safe, be cautious if you have sensitive skin around your belly. Skin reactions can occur, so it’s always best to test a small patch first or consult with a healthcare professional if you’re unsure.
But remember, mamas, Kinesiotape is just one piece of the puzzle! It’s essential to monitor your core and learn effective ways to engage those muscles properly. This will help you maintain strength and support as your beautiful baby bump grows. 💖
🔍 If you have any concerns about diastasis recti or want to ensure you’re on the right track, we highly recommend seeking the guidance of a pelvic floor physical therapist. We are experts in assessing and treating conditions related to the pelvic floor, including diastasis recti, and can provide tailored advice and exercises to meet your specific needs.
💪 Pregnancy is HARD- stay strong mamas!
📩 DM us if you have any questions or share your experiences using the Kinesiotape technique. We’d love to hear from you!

Heavy hearts today with the news Mark Bookhout, our Teacher, Mentor, and Friend, died yesterday. Thankful he transitioned at home surrounded by family and hospice care. What an amazing man and teacher! Mark, we miss you. Our hearts are with your family 💔💐❤️🩹 We share what we learned from you with our students, colleagues, and of course during patient care. Reshma and I remember our first lecture with you in Tucson — rib cage and thoracic spine mechanics (back in the ‘90s😎) So many clinical pearls, memories of shared meals, and lots of laughter Pics above are from a course we invited Mark to teach, and another we invited Gail Wetzler to teach at Restore Motion. Mark was my lab partner for Gail’s course (No pressure😳) Mark, you live on in the hearts, minds, and HANDS of your many students 💕 Your teaching continues to benefit our patients. We are often asked what makes Restore Motion different from other clinics?
One of the biggest factors that distinguishes us as a PT clinic is how we always prioritizing continued education. We believe that learning from each other is crucial to providing the best care for our patients. That’s why we have monthly motion rounds where our team members teach each other new skills and practices.
This month, our PT, Kristina, shared her expertise on “The Holistic Treatment for Postpartum and Pregnancy.”
We’re proud to have such knowledgeable and dedicated team members who are constantly striving to improve and provide the best care possible. Stay tuned for more updates on our commitment to continued education!

May is Hypermobility Awareness Month! If you experience joint pain, frequent dislocations, or have a family history of hypermobility, it’s important to be aware of the Beighton Scale. This quick test can help determine if you have joint hypermobility syndrome. Here’s how to score the test:
1. Extend your pinky finger back beyond 90 degrees.
2. Extend your thumb to touch your forearm.
3. Bend your elbow backwards- is there more than 10 deg hyperextension?
4. Bend your knee backwards- is there more than 10 deg hyperextension?
5. Place your palms flat on the floor without bending your knees.
For each item you can do, give yourself one point. If you score four or more out of five, you may have hypermobility. However, a diagnosis of hypermobility syndrome requires additional medical evaluation.
Take care of your joints and listen to your body. If you experience any symptoms, talk to your physician or physical therapist!
Spread awareness by sharing this post with your friends and family!

Let’s talk about C-sections! 🤰🏻👶🏻
It’s important to emphasize that a C-section is a major abdominal surgery that requires serious attention and care!
Did you know that during the procedure, multiple layers of tissue are cut through. 7 layers to be specific.
Skin
Fat
Fascia
Abdominal muscles
Peritoneum
Uterus
Amniotic Sac
Each layer requires time to heal properly. As we celebrate the miracle of childbirth, let’s also remember to appreciate the strength and resilience of those who undergo a C-section. 💪🏻

Winter is still here.. which means gloomy dark days.
Did you know that this can put you at risk of Vitamin D deficiency? Here are a few reasons why you should pay attention to your Vitamin D levels during the winter months:
1. Helps Fight Winter Blues: Vitamin D has been linked to improved mood and can help combat the seasonal affective disorder (SAD) that affects many people during the winter.
2. Boosts Immune System: Vitamin D is important for a healthy immune system, and getting enough of this nutrient can help keep you healthy during cold and flu season.
3. Supports Bone Health: Vitamin D is necessary for the absorption of calcium, which is essential for strong bones and teeth. Without enough Vitamin D, you could be at risk of bone loss and fractures.
So don’t forget to get your daily dose of Vitamin D this winter - whether it’s through a supplement or by spending some time outside during the daylight hours. Your body will thank you! ☀️🥛💊 #vitamind #wintersun #immunesupport #healthylifestyle

Jenna is a female black business owner and her journey to success is a testament to the strength and resilience of the black community.
As we celebrate Black History Month, it is important to acknowledge and honor the contributions and achievements of black women in business and beyond. This month serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and representation, and we must continue to uplift and support black-owned businesses every day.
We want to celebrate our colleague for her unwavering spirit and for breaking barriers in our industry.

One of the most common questions we get from patients is “isn’t sex suppose to hurt after having a baby?” NO NO NO NO!
Some reasons sex could be hurting
- [ ] Not fully healed yet from delivery
- [ ] pelvic floor is too hypertonic
- [ ] NEED MORE LUBRICANT
- [ ] Vulva is dry
- [ ] Decreased estrogen
- [ ] Abdominal tightness

Hi 🙋🏻♀️, Kristina Hsieh, DPT here!
Join our free virtual workshop tomorrow September 20 at 1:30-2:45pm!
STRONG AS A MOTHER
Is an interactive workshop where we discuss the physical recovery of the postpartum experience! LINK IN BIO
We address common questions such as …
- [ ] Should pain be normal after sex?
- [ ] Should I be leaking still?
- [ ] Is this discharge normal?
- [ ] Do I have a prolapse?
- [ ] Do I need to massage my c section scar?
- [ ] When do I feel back to my old self?
Craniosacral therapy 💆🏻♀️ is a gentle hands on technique that enhances and guides the bodies ability to self regulate. It is a great way to help calm the autonomic nervous system to allow for the body to heal and recover.
At Restore Motion, our therapist integrate craniosacral therapy into practices as a complementary way to treat the body as a whole.
First, we must always start with the basics - ANATOMY!
Learn the cranial bones: occipital bone, frontal bone, sphenoid, and parietal bones

Parents and students- Make sure you are wearing you backpack correctly so that you can prevent back pain in the future. Because let’s be honest, books 📚 and laptops👩🏻💻 ARE HEAVY!
Use the straps and make sure your backpack is against your body so that you can better use your core for stability!

Pilates is such a great way to safely strengthen!
Rashida is an instructor at Pilates Center of Rockville and she does an amazing job cueing exercises! We always feel confident sending our patients to this studio because they have trained professional instructors that know how to bridge that gap between PT and community exercise.
Love collaborating with Aliyah and Rashida!

Shoutout to all the breastfeeding, nursing, formula feeding, and pumping moms out there!
I don’t know why we don’t say this more, but FEEDING A BABY IS HARD. Whether it is trying to get a baby to latch, milk supply, clogged ducts, washing pump and bottle parts, being on call every 2-3 hrs, oversupply, undersupply, formula planning, baby allergies, keeping track of milk time… SO MUCH TO THINK ABOUT!
We want to respect all moms because everyone’s journey is different. FED IS BEST!
Thank you to @elvie for their wireless pumps that I love. It makes pumping at work so much easier.
Thank you to @lansinohusa for the breast milk bags that have been amazing at storing my breast milk.

HAPPY 18th Birthday to @restoremotion!
Restore Motion was founded in 2004 by Reshma Rathod and Miriam Graham! Two bad ass women who dedicated their careers to helping the DMV community. What started as a specialty in women’s health physical therapy that has grown to treating men/women/pediatric pelvic floor, orthopedic, dance, professional athletes, gait, neurological dysfunctions, visceral, craniosacral, ultrasound, and so much more!
Reshma and Miriam were classmates in the Thomas Jefferson Physical therapy program. Circa 1992.
Shoutout to all of our colleagues, friends, family, and patients that have helped us grow as a company over these 18 years!
